Acorn

Groq

Acorn

Acorn Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 11, 2026

Acorn has no server and no Acorn account. What you write stays in your own iCloud or Google Drive. The developer cannot see it and never receives it.

Where your notes live

Your ideas, tasks, saved links, recordings, project names and custom words are stored as ordinary files (text files, audio files, saved images), by default in the Acorn folder of iCloud Drive. iCloud is an Apple service, and Apple's privacy policy covers how it handles that data. If a device is not signed in to iCloud, or iCloud Drive is turned off, the files stay in Acorn's own storage on that device.

Settings such as the theme and switches are stored on your device. Widgets and controls read the same data on the device to show your notes, and nothing is sent elsewhere.

If you choose Google Drive

In Settings you can change where notes are stored to Google Drive. When you do, Acorn opens the system sign-in window so you can sign in to your own Google account and grant access. Acorn asks Google for two things only: your email address, to show which account is in use in Settings, and access to Google Drive limited to the files Acorn itself creates (Google calls this drive.file). Acorn cannot see or change any other file in your Drive.

Your notes are first saved on your device, then sent straight from your device to the folder Acorn creates in your own Google Drive. You can choose in Settings whether recordings go there too. None of this passes through the developer, and Acorn has no server. The sign-in credential from Google is stored in the device keychain. Google Drive is a Google service, and Google's privacy policy covers how it handles that data.

To take back access, remove Acorn at any time from the third-party connections page of your Google Account, or switch back to iCloud in Acorn's Settings. Acorn's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Voice to text

By default, what you say is turned into text on your device with Apple's built-in speech recognition, and the recording is not sent anywhere. The audio file is saved next to the note so you can listen again. If you do not want to keep recordings, tap "Delete all recordings" in Settings. The text stays.

What leaves your device only if you turn it on: Groq

In Settings you can switch transcription to Groq. It is off by default. Once you turn it on and paste your own Groq API key, Acorn sends each new recording, the text transcribed on your device, your custom words and your project names straight from your device to Groq (a US-based AI service) to transcribe, fix mistakes and remove filler words. Costs go to your own Groq account.

This does not pass through the developer. How Groq handles the data is set by Groq's privacy policy and its data documentation, and you can adjust data settings in your own Groq account. Notes you type are never sent to Groq. You can switch back to on-device transcription at any time and delete the key in Settings. The key is stored in the device keychain.

Saved links

When you share a link to Acorn from another app, Acorn saves it. Later your device connects to that address and stores the title, full text and cover image in your folder. For video links it only fetches the title and thumbnail. This works like opening the page in a browser, so the website can see your connection (for example your IP address). Tracking parameters are removed from the address before it is saved. Links and content stay in your folder and are not sent to the developer or anyone else.

What Acorn does not have

Retention and deletion

The developer holds none of your data, so there is nothing for us to delete for you. Your notes are on your own devices and in the iCloud or Google Drive you chose, and you can delete them yourself. A note deleted in Acorn goes to "Recently Deleted" for 30 days and can be put back. You can also delete the Acorn folder in iCloud Drive from the Files app or Finder, or, if you use Google Drive, delete the folder Acorn created there. Deleting the Acorn app does not delete the files in iCloud Drive or Google Drive. For data sent to Groq, use your Groq account.

Changes to this policy

If the way Acorn handles data changes, this page will be updated and the date above will change with it.
